Minnesota Hospital Association honors Children’s Minnesota for Innovation in Patient Care

Children’s Minnesota is pleased to share that a team of kid experts are recipients of an Innovation in Care Award from the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA). The recognition was presented Sept. 18 at the 2025 MHA Annual Meeting. Forty teams and individuals from hospitals and health systems across the state were honored for efforts that advance sustainability, quality and safety, and innovation.

Pediatric mental health scrubs

An interdisciplinary team at Children’s Minnesota received an Innovation in Patient Care Award for developing and implementing new mental health scrubs designed for smaller patients. The initiative was developed in response to staff and family feedback about the lack of appropriately sized attire for patients arriving at our emergency department (ED) who are experiencing a mental health crisis or awaiting community placement.

A dedicated workgroup researched industry options and identified a gap, ultimately sourcing and introducing new aqua colored scrubs designed specifically for smaller children. The project enhances comfort, safety, and respect for vulnerable patients, setting a new standard for patient-centered care.

Shanna McCann, CPXP, senior experience coach; Jen Olsen, MHA, BAN, RN, patient care manager, St. Paul emergency department; Jessica White, BSN, RN, PHN, patient care manager, Minneapolis 6th floor, represented the team at the award presentation. Other kid experts involved in the initiative included:

  • Adam Frost, director of environmental services.
  • Carly Glander, manager of patient experience.
  • Candie Larson, manager supply chain procurement.
  • Laurel Sampson, senior director supply chain operations.

Award artwork created by patient

The artwork featured on the MHA awards was created by a former Children’s Minnesota patient named Caitlin. During Caitlin’s time at Children’s Minnesota, she loved participating in the art activities and workshops provided by the Child and Family Services team. She especially loved sharing her artistic talents with staff as a way of thanking them for their care.
