Emillee Parson, speech language pathologist, has been working at Children’s Minnesota for five years now. She is sharing all of her favorite things about her career below.
What’s your position and how long have you been at Children’s Minnesota?
“I am a speech language pathologist at both the Maple Grove outpatient clinic and Children’s Minnesota’s NICU at The Mother Baby Center at Mercy. I have worked at Children’s Minnesota for five years.”
Tell us why you like your job and position.
“I love my job as a speech language pathologist because I get to play all day! I get to use my creativity to find new ways to target the patient’s goals while keeping therapy fun and exciting for the patient. I enjoy the variety in the patient population at Children’s Minnesota. I love seeing patients at all stages of their lives from premature babies up to young adults at 18+ years of age.”
What do you like about working in this field/department?
“Speech language pathology plays a large part in child development. And I love being there for each step of the journey with my patients,” Emillee said. Here are some examples of different ways patients benefit from it:
- Learning how to drink from a bottle as a newborn
- Learning how to drink safely from a cup
- Transitioning from purees to solids
- Learning and saying the first word
- Producing /s/ correctly
- Literacy in school
- Rehabilitation following a concussion
Why do you like working at Children’s Minnesota?
“I love being a speech language pathologist! I especially love being a speech language pathologist at Children’s Minnesota because it allows me to collaborate with a variety of other medical professionals, including primary care physicians, neonatologists, ENTs, pulmonologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and so many more. This collaboration means that our patients get the best and specialized care from their whole care team, all at one organization.”
