Children’s Minnesota to open new mental health day program for children and teens in Roseville

This is part of a larger vision by Children’s Minnesota to provide the full continuum of mental health services tailored for kids by providing added outpatient and inpatient mental health services throughout the Twin Cities

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (July 14, 2022) – As its latest investment in mental health services for children and teens, Children’s Minnesota is announcing plans to open a second partial hospitalization program (PHP) in Roseville in early 2023. The day treatment program is designed to meet each child’s emotional and behavioral needs through a combination of therapies during weekdays, with the patient returning home to their family on evenings and weekends. Children’s Minnesota opened its first PHP in July 2021 at its Specialty Center in Lakeville.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

“This investment is the next step in our vision as the kid experts to improve access to the full continuum of mental health services for families in our community,” said Jamie Winter, director of mental health services at Children’s Minnesota. “We currently provide care for many families in Roseville and the surrounding communities. This new program and location will help more families get the mental health care they need, where they need it.”

Annually, the Roseville PHP is expected to care for approximately 500 children between the ages of 6 and 18. It will be one of the few programs providing this level of acute mental health care to children as young as 6 years old in the northeast metro.

The Roseville PHP will open shortly after Children’s Minnesota opens its first inpatient mental health unit at its St. Paul hospital this fall. The program can provide continued intensive outpatient programming for kids and teens stepping down from the hospital, or as an alternative to hospitalization when appropriate. Children’s Minnesota also anticipates partnering with schools in the area to keep patients on track with their education as they go through treatment.

Children’s Minnesota will begin work this month to convert a preexisting 8,000 square foot space, located at 2990 Centre Point Dr., into a therapeutic, kid-friendly environment. The program and location design will include:

Children’s Minnesota’s first PHP with an indoor gym to provide recreational therapy for patients.
Individual therapies, family therapy, medication management and group therapies, such as music and art therapy.
Natural light and calming, sensory-friendly spaces.
