Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

What is the Children’s Minnesota partial hospitalization program (PHP)?

Our partial hospitalization program is a structured mental health treatment designed for children ages 6 – 18 years-old who are struggling with emotional and behavioral concerns. Patients can participate in an intensive day program during weekdays and return home to their families in the evenings and on weekends. The goal is to improve mental health symptoms and teach skills necessary for better functioning at home and school.

Each child’s treatment plan is tailored to their individual needs and includes a combination of individual, family, and group therapy. The program typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks and children spend six hours each weekday in sessions designed specifically for them. Learn more about what to expect during treatment.

How do I enroll my child in the partial hospitalization program?

Talk to your health care provider if you think the program might be a good fit for your child. You can also call one of our locations to learn more about admission requirements and policies. Before enrollment, children will complete an assessment in person with a licensed therapist.

Who could benefit from our child and adolescent PHP?

The program is an alternative to 24-hour inpatient care program. It can support children who are stepping down from hospitalization or help prevent the need for hospitalization altogether. Patients who may benefit from this program include those who:

Can participate in therapy and engage appropriately in a group setting.

Experience serious or disabling mental health symptoms that cannot be treated at a less intensive level of care.

Struggle with poor self-care.

Miss school regularly.

Have difficulty with problem-solving, decision-making, or relating to family, peers, and others.

Need support in addressing safety concerns.

Take prescribed medications as directed.

Need help using their time in meaningful and productive ways.
