Dr. Gigi Chawla, vice president, chief of general pediatrics at Children’s Minnesota, was among a panel of national experts for a U.S. News & World Report webinar looking at the future of pediatric care. “How Children’s hospitals can plan for the future of pediatric care and COVID-19” explored what children’s hospitals have learned since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020. Topics discussed included:
- The pandemic’s impact on children’s mental health.
- The latest on COVID-19 vaccines for young children.
- How pediatric hospitals address children’s health equity.
Dr. Chawla emphasized Children’s Minnesota investment in the continuum of mental health care that kids need, including the opening of the organization’s first partial hospitalization program (PHP) and the upcoming inpatient unit in St. Paul. “Just the degree of volume of patients that we are all trying to serve really has asked us to examine each part of our continuum and what we can do to enhance the care that we offer,” said Dr. Chawla.
In addition to Dr. Chawla, the panel of experts included:
- Julie B. Kaplow, MD, executive director, trauma and grief center, Children’s Hospital New Orleans.
- Dennis Lund, MD, chief medical officer, Stanford Children’s Health, associate dean for maternal and child health, Stanford School of Medicine.
- Daniel Rauch, MD, FAAP, FSHM, professor of pediatrics, Tufts University School of Medicine, chief of pediatric hospital medicine, Tufts Children’s Hospital, chair, committee on hospital care, Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
