James Burroughs named a health system chief DEI officer to know by Becker’s Hospital Review

Congratulations to James Burroughs, senior vice president, government and community relations and chief equity and inclusion officer at Children’s Minnesota, for being honored as a health system DEI officer to know by Becker’s Hospital Review. 

In his time at Children’s Minnesota, James has accelerated the health system’s DEI efforts, with significant measurable results. Among his achievements: 

  • Increased workforce diversity from 23% to nearly 30% between 2020 and the end of 2023. 
  • Increased leadership diversity from 11% to nearly 19% between 2020 and 2023  
  • Developed nursing recruitment programs with historically Black colleges and universities. 
  • Created an equity internship program at Children’s Minnesota. 
  • Increased spending with minority-owned business from $900,000 in 2022to $3 million in 2023.  

James is among 111 DEI officers from across the country recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review. The recognition honors DEI leaders spearheading initiatives that cultivate safe, forward-thinking healthcare environments where all individuals feel embraced, appreciated and secure.
