Many primary care clinicians are joining Children’s Minnesota at the Mental Health for Primary Care: The Early Years conference on April 5, 2019.
At Children’s, we recognize the increasing number of mental health concerns that are managed in the primary care office and aim to support clinician’s ongoing need for further education, training, and access to available local resources.
During this conference, local and national experts in pediatric mental health will discuss how to address gaps in practice and incorporate new information to effectively manage mental and behavioral health issues in children.
The keynote will be “Childhood stress and urban poverty: The impact of adverse childhood experience on health” presented by Roy Wade, Jr. MD, PhD, MPH, MSHP. Through his work, Dr. Wade plans to translate research on the science of childhood adversity and toxic stress into effective strategies to improve community level systems of care in economically distressed communities.

- Angela Goepferd, MD, pediatrician and director of medical education is presenting on “Are they too young to know? Gender identity development in young children.”
- Nicole Omann, MD, pediatrician is presenting on “Effectively educating parents in the office setting.”
- Joel Spalding, MD, child and adolescent psychiatrist and medical director of psychiatric services is presenting on “No magic pill: Is there a role for psych meds in young children?”
- Rebecca Vaurio, LP PhD, child psychologist is presenting on “Is this normal? Differentiating behavior problems in toddlers.”
