New COVID-19 visiting standards at Children’s Minnesota

Last updated: April 18, 2023

Masking guidelines

  • Masks are optional for parents/legal guardians, visitors, employees, volunteers, students, staff and contractors except when required by policy.
  • Anyone can wear a mask if they want to.
  • Parents/legal guardians can request that their care team wear a mask.
  • Masks need to be worn in some situations, such as:
    • When a child has a diagnosis that requires masks to be worn.
    • If you are a parent/legal guardian with mild symptoms such as cough or runny nose. (If you have symptoms of illness and are not a parent/legal guardian, please do not visit.)
    • If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or other illness.
  • Children’s Minnesota will continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance. The number of COVID-19 cases is low in the community, so masks are no longer required at all times. Masks may be required in the future if there is an increase in COVID-19 cases in the community.
  • Children’s Minnesota staff will continue to wear standard personal protective equipment such as gloves, gown and masks, per policies when needed.

Visiting standards – hospital stays

  • Four visitors are allowed at the hospital bedside, including parents/legal guardians.
  • Two adults can be with a child when coming for surgery.
  • Children ages 5-17 must be from the same household as the patient in order to visit.
  • No children under the age of five years old may visit.
  • All visitors are required to be screened for a wellness check when arriving and may not visit if they are ill or in their infectious period for COVID-19.

Visiting process

  • Parents/legal guardians and visitors must be screened for symptoms of illness daily.

Visiting standards – primary care and specialty clinics, and same-day procedures

Please only bring the people who need to be at your child’s primary care or specialty clinic visit, or same-day procedure. Two adults can be with a child when coming for surgery.

  • Additional limits may be put in place in certain areas due to space limitations.
