Work Here Wednesday: Dr. Razaan Byrne, general pediatrician

At Children’s Minnesota, we work for our patients and families and we believe children come first. That goes for all the positions open here. Our doctors, nurses, support staff, custodial staff, cooks and more are all important to the mission of Children’s.

To learn more about what it’s like to work at Children’s Minnesota, we spoke with Dr. Razaan Byrne who works at the Minneapolis primary care clinic.

Dr. Byrne first joined the Children’s community during medical school several years ago, and has been a full-time outpatient clinician since August 2017.  In addition to her care-providing, she currently serves on our Muslim Employee Resource Group (MERG) leadership team where she focuses on equity and inclusion within the organization. Through MERG, she helps to engage the Children’s community with educational events focused on the Islamic community we serve, as well as engage the community in celebrations during Islamic holidays.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

A typical day includes several outpatient appointments in our clinic, focusing on a variety of concerns including standard well child care, acute illnesses, complex medical needs and coordinated care, as well as behavioral/mental health concerns.

What do you love most about your job?

I am thankful every day for my wonderful patients and families, with whom I get to establish amazing relationships over the years. As primary pediatricians, we are blessed to have families who entrust their children to our care, and allow us to become a special part of their family’s journey. Our clinic is also extremely lucky to have the most fantastic HUCs, triage nurses, MAs, providers, pharmacists, behavioral health specialists, interpreters, and support staff in the business, with whom I get to work every day!

What do you think makes kids amazing?

Kids are resilient, cheerful, non-apologetic and honest. They can exhibit the best qualities of humanity and it is a joy to work with them every day.

What can you tell us about the holiday Eid and the Children’s Muslim ERG?

Muslims celebrate two holidays each year, Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha. Eid-al-Fitr celebrates the end of the month of Ramadan, and occurred on June 4th this year. We recently celebrated Eid-al-Adha on Aug. 11. This holiday is a time for Muslims to reflect on their faith, sacrifice, and blessings over the past year. Eid-al-Adha is the time during which many Muslims complete the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca.

Both Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha are joyous celebrations for Muslims, and we absolutely love to come together as a community and celebrate with everyone, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Traditionally, people say “Eid Mubarak!” to each other (which loosely translates to “Blessed Eid”), and we love when our patients, colleagues and friends tell us “Eid Mubarak!” during the holidays. Our Muslim ERG is also open to everyone at Children’s!

Employee resource groups are part of what makes working at Children’s special. Currently there are five employee resource groups that are open to all employees: Asian employee resource group, Black employee empowerment network, Hispanic/Latino employee resource group, Muslim employee resource group and the PRIDE employee resource group.

We’re looking for individuals who are driven to join us in our mission to champion the health needs of children and their families. Want to make Children’s Minnesota an even better place? Apply today.
