When Can I Make My Own Breakfast?

When can I make my own breakfast?

Kids as young as 4 or 5 can get a bowl of cold cereal, but what if you want something else? You'll need adult supervision to use appliances, such as the toaster and microwave. Once you get the hang of these, your mom or dad will probably give you permission to use it on your own.

For a lot of kids, this happens after age 10, provided they can safely reach these appliances and understand steam and hot surfaces can burn. It's also smart to talk to your mom or dad about what your breakfast options are — and get an idea of how much to make. One waffle or two? How much cereal goes in the bowl?
