Pediatric hospice and palliative medicine fellowship
Children’s Minnesota completely funds and is the site of pediatric training for the one-year ACGME-accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship through the University of Minnesota, and is one of the few combined pain, palliative care and integrative medicine departments in the country. The department of Pain Medicine, Palliative Care and Integrative Medicine at Children’s is among the largest and most comprehensive programs of its kind in the country, with 36 interdisciplinary team members. Additionally, the Children’s Palliative Care team sees patients in the hospital, in clinic, and through the area’s only pediatric-specific home palliative care and hospice programs housed within the department.
The pain & palliative care program is devoted to control acute, chronic/complex and procedural pain in all in- and outpatients in close collaboration with all pediatric sub-specialties at Children’s Minnesota. The team also provides holistic, interdisciplinary care for children and teens with life-limiting or terminal diseases and their families.
Integrative Medicine provides and teaches integrative therapies (such as massage, acupuncture/acupressure, biofeedback, aromatherapy, self-hypnosis) to provide care that promotes optimal health and supports the highest level of functioning in all individual child’s activities. The department received the “Circle of Life Award” by the American Hospital Association in 2008, and was he 2013 recipient of the “Clinical Centers of Excellence in Pain Management Award” by the American Pain Society.
The fellowship offers a specific pediatric emphasis for those interested in primarily caring for pediatric patients in their future career. Training aims to provide physicians with advanced skills in holistic, inter-disciplinary care for children and teens with life-limiting or terminal diseases and their families.
As Children’s has one of the few combined pain, palliative care and integrative medicine departments in the country, the curriculum has a particular focus on state-of-the-art pharmacologic and integrative (“non-pharmacologic”) pain and symptom management. One fellow per year is accepted for the pediatric emphasis program.
Our Pediatric Pain and Palliative Medicine fellowship is through the University of Minnesota. You can apply online through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) Fellowships, but you will need to review the eligibility criteria and materials for application prior to submitting your application.
