Children’s Minnesota welcomes four new providers to its cancer and blood disorders program

Children’s Minnesota is pleased to announce that Katie Greenwood, MD, FAAP; Jennifer Hess, DO, MS, MPH; Megan Hilgers, MD; and Chelsea Self, MD, have joined the expanding cancer and blood disorders program. They join an impressive team that is the largest in the upper Midwest and still growing; eight new providers have been welcomed since April 2023.

Katie Greenwood, MD, FAAP, pediatric hematologist-oncologist

Katie Greenwood, MD, FAAP, pediatric hematologist-oncologist, is originally from Grand Forks, ND. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College, graduating summa cum laude with degrees in Biology and Spanish. She then moved to Nebraska for medical school and pediatric residency. She underwent fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital where she served as chief fellow and graduated in 2019.

She remained on faculty at Baylor College of Medicine until 2021. Dr. Greenwood has a passion for delivering high-quality care and a special interest in non-malignant hematology including bone marrow failure and hemoglobinopathies. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and enjoying the outdoors with her husband, kids and the family dog.

Jennifer Hess, DO, MS, MPH, pediatric oncology generalist

Jennifer Hess, DO, MS, MPH, pediatric oncology generalist, completed her medical training at Des Moines University. She stayed in Des Moines, Iowa, for her pediatric residency at Blank Children’s Hospital before going to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship. Most recently, Dr. Hess served as the Medical Director of Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant Inpatient Services at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and as an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

Shortly before accepting her new role, Dr. Hess worked on a quality improvement project to reduce re-admission rates in patients newly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia by implementing a daily electronic symptom questionnaire. Dr. Hess and her husband are excited to be back in their home state to raise their kids surrounded by friends and family.

Megan HilgersMD, specializes in leukemia/lymphoma

Megan HilgersMD, specializes in leukemia/lymphoma. She attended medical school at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hilgers went on to also complete her pediatric residency and hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hilgers’ passion lies in caring for patients with hematologic malignancies. She is raising three young children with her husband in the Twin Cities. In her rare free time, she enjoys running around various lakes.

Chelsea SelfMD, is joining the solid tumor team

Chelsea SelfMD, is joining the solid tumor team. She went to medical school at New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y. She completed her pediatric residency at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Ill., and her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, Colo. Most recently, Dr. Self served as a hematologist/oncologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Her latest research includes quality improvement initiatives on the monitoring of ototoxicity in solid tumor oncology patients receiving platinum therapy and outpatient post-hydration IV fluidsIn her free time, she enjoys chasing around her two children, dog and cat.
