Celebrating National Nurses Month
May is National Nurses Month! Our wonderful teams of nurses are at the heart of what we do at Children’s Minnestoa. For the month of May, we’ll be highlighting two nurses and the wonderful work that they do.
Kristine Waller, emergency department (ED) RN, has been working at Children’s Minnesota for seven years now. She is sharing all of her favorite things about her career below.
What’s your position and how long have you been at Children’s Minnesota?
“I’m a RN in our ED and I’ve been at Children’s Minnesota for seven years.”
Tell us why you like your job and position.
“I love the variety the ED has to offer. Every day is something different and you never know what will come through the doors at any given time. Being a part of a team that saves a child’s life is extraordinary!”
What do you like about working in this field/department?
“As an ED nurse, I like all the different nursing skills I get to use to help sick kids: from nitrous oxide for sedation to starting intravenous (IV), we get to do it all.
“I love working with kids! They are awesome. I also enjoy the teamwork my ED team uses every day. From the interpreters, clinical support associates (CSA), health unit coordinators (HUC), child life specialists, nurses and doctors, it really is a team effort. The last year has been a very busy and challenging time in the ED, and I feel so blessed to work with the most amazing coworkers.”
Why do you like working at Children’s Minnesota?
“Almost 10 years ago, my twins were born at 28 weeks and had to stay in the NICU at Children’s Minnesota for 47 days. The care that they received was nothing short of amazing. Our nurses were the best, not only for our babies but also for my husband and I.
“After our stay, I knew that I wanted to leave the adult ED and switch to a pediatric ED. I am now able to give care to kids like the care my family received when we were at Children’s Minnesota. I hope I am able to make a difference in families lives like the NICU nurses made in ours.”
