At Children’s Minnesota, our mission is to champion the health needs of children and families. We are committed to improving children’s health by providing the highest-quality, family-centered care, advanced through research and education.
Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced updated recommendations for childhood vaccines leaving many families with questions. We want to assure families that vaccines are safe and effective, backed by decades of research and science.
Our current vaccine schedule, care model and clinical practices will continue with shared decision-making for all vaccines. This is, in fact, a large part of what the government is recommending. We partner with families, listen to their concerns, and offer clear, science-based recommendations to provide the best possible protection for children and their communities.
Frequently asked questions
What was announced by the CDC?
The CDC recently announced updates to its childhood vaccine guidance. These updates change how some vaccines are categorized and emphasize shared decision-making between families and clinicians for certain immunizations. The announcement has generated national attention and questions, but it does not mean that childhood vaccines are unsafe or unnecessary.
Does this change the care my child receives at Children’s Minnesota?
No. Our vaccine schedule, clinical recommendations and care model will continue to emphasize the shared decision-making model we’ve always used. Children’s Minnesota will continue to follow evidence-based science.
What vaccine guidance does Children’s Minnesota follow?
We follow recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control, both of which stress shared decision-making between doctors and patient families regarding every vaccine. These decisions are based on decades of scientific research and real-world clinical evidence focused on keeping children safe and healthy.
How are vaccine decisions made for my child?
We use shared decision-making for all vaccines. This means your child’s care team partners with you, listens to your questions and concerns, and provides clear, science-based recommendations so you can make informed decisions together.
Are childhood vaccines safe?
Yes. Childhood vaccines recommended by the AAP and the CDC have been carefully studied and monitored for safety and effectiveness. They play a critical role in protecting children, families, and communities from serious illness.
What if I have questions or concerns about vaccines?
We encourage you to talk with your child’s care team. Your providers are here to listen, answer questions, and support you with trusted, evidence-based information.
Will insurance continue to cover these vaccines?
Yes. All immunizations recommended by the CDC as of December 31, 2025, will continue to be fully covered. Families will not have to purchase them out of pocket.
Will Children’s Minnesota update families if anything changes?
Yes. If there are any future developments that affect care at Children’s Minnesota, we will communicate clearly and directly with families.
