Young adult cancer survivor reunites with his physician: Dario’s story

To celebrate our 100th anniversary at Children’s Minnesota, we’re looking back on the impact our kid experts have had on patients and families in Minnesota and across the region.

Meet Dario Chavez. Shortly after graduating high school, Dario found out he had a grapefruit-sized tumor in his abdomen. Tests revealed the 19-year-old had rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer. Children’s Minnesota became his home away from home during his treatment.

“One thing about Children’s Minnesota that I’ll never forget is how comfortable they made me feel,” said Dario describing his experience. “They went above and beyond to make sure that I was pain free.”

Because of the chemotherapy and treatment to cure his cancer, it was expected that Dario would not be able to have kids in the future. But today, Dario is not only married to his high school sweetheart, but the proud father of two boys.

Learn more about his story and watch as Dario reunites with his physician, Dr. Susan Sencer, vice president and chief of specialty pediatric, nearly 20 years after his diagnosis.
