Pediatric Pain, Palliative and Integrative Medicine Program

Going beyond medicine

The Kid Experts in the Pain, Palliative and Integrative Medicine department at Children’s Minnesota work across disciplines to support patients and their families at every step of their kid’s care. We use a comprehensive and holistic approach to pain prevention and treatment planning at all stages of life for babies, children and teenagers. Our team includes medical providers, physical therapists, integrative (non-pharmacological) medicine providers, psychological support providers, medical social workers and spiritual care experts. We collaborate with families and their child’s current medical team to provide care to kids living with serious illnesses to improve their quality of life and live fully.

Within the Pain, Palliative and Integrative Medicine department, we provide care suited to your child’s needs through three different branches:

Our interdisciplinary pain and rehabilitation team provides short to long-term pain management solutions for your child’s pain. At Children’s Minnesota, we treat kids’ physical pains ranging from acute complex to chronic pain they experience. We’ve also expanded to providing mental and emotional pain management support.

The palliative care team is an additional support system that provides assistance with medical decision-making and care plan options to families with kids who are living with serious illnesses. Treatment in palliative care is appropriate at any stage of illness. Palliative care works alongside curative treatment so that kids can live as long and as well as possible. The palliative care team provides both in-clinic and at-home care to best fit your child’s needs.

The integrative medicine program combines the best of complementary and conventional medical therapies to enhance traditional treatments. Our Kid Experts develop holistic solutions for children living with chronic illness, acute and chronic pain, side effects from medical treatments and emotional challenges such as depression and anxiety.

To provide the most accessible family-centered care, we see patients in both of our hospitals in Minneapolis and St. Paul, in our Kiran Stordalen and Horst Rechelbacher Pediatric Pain, Palliative and Integrative Medicine Clinic, as well as through our home palliative care and home hospice programs.
