Children’s Minnesota health equity team recognized for health equity improvement efforts

The Health Equity team at Children’s Minnesota has been honored as a Top Finalist for the 2023 Bernard J. Tyson National Award for Excellence in Pursuit of Healthcare Equity by The Joint Commission and Kaiser Permanente. The award recognizes health care organizations and their partners who achieved a measurable, sustained reduction in one or more health care disparity. Children’s Minnesota is one of six organizations selected as a Top Finalist and the only one in Minnesota.

The Healthy Equity team was recognized for reducing the disparity between white patients and Black patients with well-controlled asthma. In January 2021, approximately 80% of white patients had asthma that was well controlled compared to 62.7% of Black patients, for a disparity of over 17%. The Health Equity team addressed barriers related to patient education, environment, illness and finances. The team also educated staff about health equity and asthma management. By using a multidisciplinary, multimodal approach combined with continuous improvement and problem solving, the team was able to decrease the overall disparity to 8.9% by December 2022. With continued focus, the rate decreased to 2.4% in April 2023.

UChicago Medicine won the 2023 Tyson Award for its initiative titled: Systematic Treatment and Management of Postpartum Hypertension (STAMPP-HTN). A virtual ceremony to honor UChicago Medicine and acknowledge Top Finalists will take place Friday, Nov. 27.
