Children’s Minnesota presents on adolescent contraceptives to Mercy Hospital pediatricians

Kate O’Flynn O’Brien, MD, board certified obstetrician-gynecologist with Children’s Minnesota Gynecology team presented “Contraceptive Update” to the Mercy Hospital pediatrics section on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020. This was the first time a Children’s Minnesota clinician has presented to this group virtually and it was well attended by pediatricians from a variety of practices throughout the Northwest metro.

After an update on the types of contraceptives available to adolescents, Dr. O’Flynn O’Brien suggested a combination of acceptability and adherence are the basis for contraceptive decisions in adolescents and girls. She believes good clinician counseling can influence which method is ultimately chosen.

Along with making herself available to her colleagues via Children’s Minnesota Physician Access, Dr. O’Flynn O’Brien shared the US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (US MEC) resource by the CDC which helps assess individual patient risk with various contraceptive methods. This publication is easy to find on the CDC website.

Dr. O’Flynn O’Brien is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist who joined Children’s Minnesota last summer, and has joined two partners here providing gynecologic care to girls and young women. She came to us from Houston, TX where she completed a fellowship in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. Her special interests include adolescent sexual health and contraception, diagnosis and management of menstrual irregularities, minimally invasive surgery, and obesity.
