2023-2024 Nursing annual report

Welcome to the Children’s Minnesota 2023 – 2024 Nursing Annual Report

In 2024, we at Children’s Minnesota celebrated our 100th birthday, honoring our kid experts who have provided remarkable care throughout the century and made Children’s Minnesota what it is today: one of the largest, most respected pediatric health systems in the nation.

While health care has rapidly evolved since 1924, one thing that will never change at Children’s Minnesota is the excellence, innovation, teamwork and passion of our nurses. Along with the broader clinical team, they strive to provide the best possible care for all kids, every day. This is evident in the Nursing Annual Report you are about to explore.

From piloting first-of-its-kind hospital-issued clothing and providing innovative patient family education, to preventing patient harm in record-setting fashion and receiving Magnet® redesignation, this report showcases our nurses’ expertise. It is also a testament to the compassion and collaboration that lives within Children’s Minnesota.

The phrase, “Nurses inspire nurses,” couldn’t be truer for me. Every day I am honored and proud to represent more than 2,000 Children’s Minnesota nurses in our collective pursuit of being every family’s essential partner in raising healthier children.

Children’s Minnesota overview

Children’s Minnesota is one of the largest freestanding pediatric health systems in the U.S., and the only health system in Minnesota to provide care exclusively to children — from before birth through early adulthood.

An independent and not-for-profit system since 1924, Children’s Minnesota serves the Upper Midwest at three hospitals, nine primary care clinics, six rehabilitation sites and eight specialty care sites.

At Children’s Minnesota, we bring together more experts across more specialties than any other pediatric hospital system in the Midwest. As the region’s largest pediatric program, we partner every day with clinicians across the Midwest to make sure every child has the best possible health care.

We champion the health needs of children and families. We are committed to improving children’s health by providing the highest-quality, family-centered care, advanced through research and education.” –Children’s Minnesota mission statement.

Trusted, nationally recognized care

Children’s Minnesota is regularly recognized nationally for excellence in care, quality, innovation and industry leadership.

  • In 2023, Children’s Minnesota was re-verified as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program. Level I is the highest distinction given by the ACS to health systems that perform complex surgical procedures on unborn babies, newborns, children and teens.

  • We received Magnet recognition again in 2023. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® is a prestigious acknowledgement of nursing excellence, quality patient care and innovations in professional nursing practice. It is earned by only 10% of U.S. hospitals. Designations are valid for four years.

  • We’re consistently ranked among the top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

  • We’re Minnesota’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in a hospital dedicated solely to kids.
