At Children’s Minnesota, we believe children always come first. They are awesomely resilient. Eternally optimistic. Totally fearless. They are what we want to be when we grow up.
Makayla Dawson, patient care supervisor in our inpatient mental health program, has been working at Children’s Minnesota for a year now. She is sharing all her favorite things about working at Children’s Minnesota below.
What’s your position and how long have you been at Children’s Minnesota?
“I’m a patient care supervisor and I’ve been working at Children’s Minnesota for about a year now.”
Tell us why you like your job and position.
“I love coaching folks on how to improve their skills of group facilitation, milieu management and personal skills, such as giving constructive feedback and asking hard questions. Being a part of that transformation from when folks come in, to a few weeks or months off orientation is a really cool thing to see. I also love to get to know people and see them genuinely enjoy being with the kids – it always just puts a huge smile on my face!”
What do you like about working in this field/department?
“I love our focus on trauma-informed care and really meeting the patient where they are at with zero judgment. In an inpatient setting, it is so important to listen (really listen!) and help kids learn what they can do to get through those really hard moments. Our interdisciplinary team does a wonderful job at doing just this while also setting up outpatient resources that will set them and their families up for success.”
Why do you like working at Children’s Minnesota?
“I love the family-centered approach that Children’s Minnesota has. By taking into consideration the entire family unit, we can better care for and provide better resources for our kids!”
