Changes to your care

At Children’s Minnesota, we’re always looking for ways to improve your child’s health and your family’s experience. In 2021, we will move to a team care model. This new model gives your child a consistent team of providers dedicated to their unique needs. Your provider will discuss our team model at your next appointment.

Please be aware of the following changes we are making in support of our new team model.

Appointment availability

Our Minneapolis clinic is open on Wednesdays only. Scheduled appointments and diabetes walk-ins are welcome. To account for fewer clinic days in Minneapolis, we’ve added appointment times to our Minnetonka, St. Paul and Woodbury locations.

Blood glucose review requests

Starting in April 2021, non-emergency blood glucose reviews — for concerns other than hypoglycemia or illness — will be scheduled as a virtual care visit and will be billed as such. This change will ensure our providers have adequate time in their schedules for these reviews.

We will continue to address emergency blood glucose review requests for hypoglycemia and illness on the same day.

Expanded use of MyChildren’s patient portal

Through the MyChildren’s patient portal, you can communicate with your child’s care team, schedule appointments and refill medications. If you are not using the MyChildren’s portal, we encourage you to create an account. If you need assistance, a member of our team can help.

We are moving several processes to the MyChildren’s patient portal. These include:

  • Lab results: We will no longer send normal lab results by mail for routine diabetes surveillance lab tests. These will be available for viewing on the MyChildren’s portal. Abnormal lab results will be sent by mail and also posted to the MyChildren’s portal.
  • Prescription refills: Your child’s prescriptions will be renewed every six months or during your scheduled clinic appointment. If your pharmacy says you have no remaining refills, please ask them to verify. Your pharmacy should have both old and new prescriptions on file. Please use the MyChildren’s portal to submit prescription questions and requests.
  • Forms: Requests to complete forms (camp, school, driving, athletics and FMLA) can be sent via the MyChildren’s portal. Please allow 14 days for completion.

Pre-appointment planning

Please upload your child’s child’s insulin pump and blood glucose sensor information 24 hours before your child’s visit. This helps us prepare for your appointment. We will remind you of this when you schedule your next appointment. Access pump resources on our diabetes resources page.

If you have questions

If you have any questions about these changes, please call the clinic at 651-220-6624.
